Permanence of Memory, 1995-96

Public installation, audio testimony, Two Lights State Park, Maine

In the interior of Battery 201 in Two lights State Park Maine, Bradley McCallum created a public artwork that takes on the complexity of remembering WWII. In Maine, where 2,000 residents died, McCallum used oral history, and collected objects to transport viewers into the headspace of a veteran. Permanence of Memory uses fragments of illuminated wartime images coupled with the voices of Maine veterans to evoke a disturbing yet familiar vision of the war.
